On 6-7 March 2008, ECMWF hosted the 18th session of the Council of the European Meteorological Society (EMS). The current President of the EMS Council is Dr David Burridge (Royal Meteorological Society, UK).

The European Meteorological Society (EMS) provides a forum for disseminating information and facilitating discussions on themes and issues connected with meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, earth observation and the climate system.

The Society’s main focus is to encourage and support scientific exchange within the European context. There is particular emphasis on enhancing the role of meteorology within the European society, considering how to efficiently and competently inform the European public, and raising awareness about the relevance of the meteorological profession. This includes explaining the specific characteristics of the meteorological science and the challenge in interpreting the results and communicating them to the general public, politicians and decision makers.

Any body with an interest in supporting the aims of the society may be eligible for Associate Membership. Such bodies include non-European Meteorological Societies, National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, companies with interests in meteorology, related sciences and their applications, and Europe-wide bodies with similar interests.

ECMWF is an Associate Member to the EMS.
