Sebastien Garrigues

Scientist - Land Data Assimilation
Copernicus Department, Copernicus CAMS Services

Summary:
Sebastien Garrigues is a full-time scientist in the coupled data assimilation team, earth system assimilation section in the research department. He has 22 years of research experiences in Earth observation and Earth system modelling for NWP and environmental applications (hydrology, carbon budget, agriculture and atmospheric composition). He has skills in land surface modelling, Earth observation, data assimilation and machine learning . His approach relies on learning the land processes from process-based modelling, data assimilation and machine learning.  His current research aims at improving the land data assimilation system in the Integrated Forecast System (IFS) to consistently constraint both the water and carbon cycles over land. His main achievement is the development of machine learning-based observation operators to assimilate level-1 microwave observations and Solar-Induced chlorophyll Fluorescence (SIF) .
Professional interests:
  • Earth system science for NWP, CO2 and hydrology:
    • Land surface: water and carbon cycles, surface-atmosphere coupling
    • Atmospheric composition: aerosol, biomass burning emission
  • Machine-learning: observation operator, model emulator, parameter optimisation
  • Data assimilation
