SMOS monitoring

The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission is the second Earth Explorer Opportunity mission developed as part of the European Space Agency (ESA) Living Planet programme. The SMOS mission is a polar-orbiting satellite, providing 2D interferometric radiometer measurements of brightness temperature at L-band (1.4 GHz). At this frequency the atmosphere is almost transparent and surface emission is strongly related to soil moisture over continental surfaces and salinity over oceans. This page shows multi-angular and multi-polarised statistics of the SMOS brightness temperature over land and oceans.
